Taste of Georgetown! Since all of our friends were out of town, John and I checked out Taste of Georgetown and got some tastings of beer and wines. The event was pretty nice and a good amount of people showed up despite the cloudiness/raininess from what's left of Hurrican Joaquin. John and I stayed there for a bit, and then continued the drinking back at my apartment and then later onto U Street.

Didn't go out of town for the long weekend, and today was a pretty lull day. I decided to go explore Meridian Hills Park (aka Malcolm X Park) in D.C. The waterfalls/steps were pretty cool, and there's a whole big section above it where people play sports on the fields.

Baltimore Adventure!
Margaret, John and I did a day trip to Baltimore to eat and be tourists. Today's weather was perfect - 70's and not a single cloud in the sky. Not too hot and not too cold. Some of the views of the city were taken from the Pagoda at Patterson Park and from Federal Hill.

First stop was Blue Moon Cafe in Fells Point and we got the Cap'n Crunch French Toast and Sweet Baby Jesus (eggs benedict, crab, potatoes). The food was pretty good and we left the place stuffed. While waiting for Blue Moon Cafe, we wandered around the local outdoor market at Fells Point. They sold antique stuff and very artsy stuff, some are actually pretty cool and would make good decorations at home! I like walking around these places and seeing all the interesting things people sell.

After brunch, we went to Patterson Park to walk off the food. The park is pretty big, and one of the cooler things in it was the Pagoda that overlooks all of Baltimore. From just 3 levels up, you see the entire Inner Harbor and see out into the Chesapeake Bay. And this was from the bottom of the spiral staircase that takes you up the pagoda.

After wandering around Inner Harbor for a bit, we came to Fort McHenry, where the Star Spangled Banner was written. Military history is always interesting, and reading about the Battle of 1812 was really cool. We walked around the fort and saw all the numerous cannons. John and I tried to push a cannon to rotate it, but it didn't budge...

These groups photos were mainly taken atop Federal Hill. We were just fooling around and pretty much doing photoshoots for each other. Lots of goofing around between the three of us and I think the photos capture the silliness pretty well.

Baltimore neighborhoods have such character. Every section has it's own vibe and the stores are so unique. This block has The Horse You Came In On and How Great Thou Art.

This place is soo cool! The artist takes scrap parts - from glasses, shoes, telephones, anything - and glues the pieces together to make art. It becomes pretty much a mosaic of a mix of random scrap parts and they look so nice. So creative too!

The Horse You Came In On: the oldest continually operating bar in the U.S. The vibe and atmosphere in the bar is very bar-like, and less of a sports bar. I really liked it. We got a few drinks there and just chatted, watched the Ravens-Browns game, and listened to live music from Whiskey Promise. They took cover requests and we had them play a couple of songs before they were done. The bar felt like an old American bar where people come to socialize and hang out, unlike most bars today where everyone comes to watch football games.

Spontaneous trip to a nursery in search for succulents, and stumbled upon a pumpkin patch! Seeing so many pumpkins remind me that fall is here and fall always gives me a bittersweet feeling. It's like trying to do as many things - pumpkin picking, seeing the foliage - before the weather turns too cold. Time to be more adventurous!

We played around the pumpkin patch for quite a while. There were a bunch of parents with their 6 year old kids, and then there was us. We tried taking photos with the pumpkin in midair, and it turned out much better than I thought!

After the pumpkins, we went to Old Town Alexandria to walk around. It's a dainty little town that reminds me of historic neighborhoods, with cobble stone roads and brick houses. Lots of restaurants and bars there and we got ice cream from Pop's Ice Cream on Kings Street. Also stopped by the waterfront and checked out the Torpedo Factory Art Center.

White House Garden Tour!
We woke up at 8am to line up for tickets, and then came back at 3pm for the tour. It was so cool and so worth it. We walked onto the White House grounds and was literally right up against the White House. The house itself doesn't look that big, but there are so many things on the grounds. There's a playground, swimming pool, tennis/basketball courts, and a bunch of gardens. We also saw the Oval Office from the outside and the podium the president always speaks on. Really cool tour!

Hangover hike up Old Rag in the Shenandoah. Was running on 3 hours of poor sleep, but we conquered Old Rag! It was a really fun trail actually and a lot harder than we expected. The rock scrambles were actually pretty difficult and takes a good amount of effort and strengths. We went for the foliage, but I think we were a bit early and not all the leaves turned colors yet, but still pretty nonetheless. I haven't hiked in so long and after Old Rag, now I want to do more hikes in the fall!

The first part of the trail is just a lot of uphill. And as we got to the top it became all rock scrambles. Then the end was just all downhill.

There were many scenic points along the hike, and we stopped at pretty much all of them. The view of the Shenandoah was so beautiful - just a sea of mountains of different colors. But man, it was so windy and cold at the top! With the wind it felt like it was in the 30's! Totally worth it though.

Photos of us thoughout the hike! We were so not prepared for the hike since we all woke up not in the best shape. For a 10-mile hike, we only had a bag of Doritos and almost forgot to bring water. We rationed out the Doritos to eat it at the top so we'd have enough energy to make it back down. Despite our struggles, we made the hike in just under 6 hours!

Friends in DC! Patty, Stephen, Rachel and Kevin came to DC this morning and I met up with them in the afternoon after work. Went to the White House, but unfortunately didn't get to see Obama. And then walked to the Washington and Lincoln Monuments. Had dinner at Founding Farmers and it was delicious as usual. Got the prime rib this time and it was soo good!

We went to Baltimore to meet Sally and Steve and had lunch at Thames Street Oyster House. Got the lobster roll this time and it was amazingly delicious. Afterwards, we walked around Fells Point because there was a festival there today, and then wandered to Inner Harbor for a little bit. We got drinks at the Marriott and their 5th floor rooftop has a really great view of Inner Harbor!

I was supposed to come back to DC after Baltimore, but I ended up going with them to Delaware and staying at Sally's for the night. We got some firewood at night and made a camp fire by the firepit in Sally/Rachel's residential community. It was a struggle getting the fire started because we didn't have any twigs or anything. Went from lint and cardboard straight to the large chunks of firewood. After like 20 minutes I finally got the fire started. Boy scouts didn't fail me afterall! Then we roasted marshmallows and had those with beer. :)

Us all huddled around the fire (not really a camp fire...) It was so warm and toasty.

Apple picking at Milburn Farms! The weather was so nice today so it was perfect. We had to go on a tractor ride to get to the apple picking area, and there were Fuji and Granny Smith apples. We didn't actually spend that long picking apples. The orchards made a good photo backdrop. :)
